Chester may be the latest in a long line of queer characters on television, but his narrative is also so different from what television usually has to offer. Unlike many queer narratives on film and television, Chester’s has nothing to do with coming out. Chester is out — about as out as a high school student can get. His journey throughout the series is about finding self-love and becoming whole and dealing with a world that actively works to fracture queer people, people of color, and those at the intersection. “Chester has a very complicated relationship with love, because of his chronic sense of loneliness,” he says. “Chester has such a sense of self, that he’s not necessarily attracted to people who don’t have the same sense of self.” The trailer will be coming out next week, and considering her gay best friend is played by her real-life boyfriend Pierson Fodé, this is going to be a fun one to see.
