When I joined Teach For America in 2011, after working in state policy and budgeting for several years, I saw similar biases impact the expectations of our kids’ education based on their zip code, skin color, and income. Many elected officials say things like, “If parents just [insert belief or action], then our children wouldn’t be failing.” But this is wrong. Students and families are facing systemic barriers and we need leaders who are mad and ready to change the system. This speech will be nothing more than the insignificant return of Trump reading from a teleprompter, this time with his cowardly congressional stooges, who, after the pomp and circumstance of the SOTU, will spare no expense at demonizing the vulnerable and propagating isolationism as exceptionalism in their policies. In between the hypocritical rounds of applause, remember that the nations they claim to have such exceptionality over are the same countries they are actively attempting to turn the U.S. into.
