The language is almost always actual Arabic, except for a few rare instances in which I took some creative liberties. I knew from the start that language needed to be a part of it. Arabic is such a beautiful tongue, the rich and sometimes guttural sounds seemingly defined by the harsh atmosphere of the desert and its sweeping nights. It’s also a language made of countless dialects, which I drew upon in constructing the world. But as I was writing, my brain constantly picked at one chord: If the book is set in Arawiya, aren’t the characters already speaking Arawiyan? How could I choose to use English here and Arabic there? To combat this, I introduced a second tongue called Safaitic.
