Jalen Randall won’t be able to cast a ballot in the general election on November 3, 2020, so the 16-year-old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is finding other ways to make her voice heard — and to remind politicians that she’s also going to hold them accountable. “People don’t get that so much music has come from Atlanta, and it isn’t just rappers,” says Olu, who studied architecture and design at Hampton University. “Some of the greatest bands ever done came from the city.” Adding, “[Famous 1980’s R&B and funk group] The S.O.S. Band is from Atlanta, and they got HITS. People just see trap music and they’re right, that’s there. But there are so many other sounds that come from the city and that’s some of what we are made up of creatively. We come from the (music sharing site) iMeem era, that’s how we found all these different types of music, and that’s allowed us to explore our musical diversity.
